After a year in which most of us were confined to our homes and barely touched our cars, perhaps you’re feeling the itch to hit the open road with a good, old-fashioned road trip. Few feelings are more freeing than cruising down the highway, but it raises a question: What new car should I be driving down the highway in 2021?
Unfortunately this desire to hit the open road is coinciding with surging gas prices, so it is especially prudent to factor in the gas mileage when searching for a new car. Whether it’s because your lease is up or it is finally time to part ways with your old, beat-up car, we’ll explore the new cars that have recently released or are eventually releasing in 2021.
One of the most iconic cars of the second half of the 1900s, the Ford Bronco, is back, and Ford is releasing an updated, modern version of the car. While certainly not a cheap option, the most basic version is selling for $29,995, the new Bronco is packed with features. One of the cars it is most comparable to is a Jeep Wrangler, but the Bronco comes with an engine equivalent to over 300 broncos. While there is no hybrid model available, the Bronco can get up to 21 miles per gallon. For those who love to offroad (and look great doing it), then the Bronco could be the car for you.
For those in the market for a more practical car that can fit the whole family, then the 2021 Chevy Tahoe could pique your interest. For those who find the Chevy Suburban unwieldy, the Tahoe is slightly trimmer and is basically what the Suburban would look like if it went on a diet. It still has the capacity to fit up to 9 people — perfect for a comfortable and spacious road trip. And while it may fit the whole family, and even some friends, the con is that it averages about 17 miles per gallon when accounting for both highway and local driving.
While technically slated to come out in 2022, the GMC Hummer EV is too enticing to leave off the list. Although gas-guzzling cars have started to go out of fashion in favor of more eco-friendly models, the Hummer has been revamped and is now an electric vehicle. While Hummer EV may sound like an oxymoron, owners are not sacrificing power or off-road capability. It allegedly has a 0-60 of 3 seconds flat. The engine is merely where the fun begins; the Hummer has a feature called the “crab-walk ,” where it is able to move diagonally, which is incredibly unique and innovative. Unfortunately for those who would like to purchase this car, it is going to cost you a pretty penny — the first edition runs over $112,000, and even subsequent, stripped down versions will still start at almost $80,000.
