If you listen to the legion of rabid Dallas Cowboys fans, they will tell you that there is never a bad time to bet on the Dallas Cowboys to win the Super Bowl. They will, of course, have conveniently forgotten last season.
But heading into 2021, as crazy as it sounds, they might actually be right.
Fans of the other 31 NFL teams (along with some not-so-rabid Cowboys fans) will likely be a little skeptical. They will not have faith in Dak Prescott and the potential of the Dallas offense, nor will they believe the defense will be any better than it was last year.
So, who is right? Are the Cowboys a good bet for the Super Bowl or not?
It is impossible to know who is right until the season starts. Without seeing the defense in action, it is hard to tell if it has been fixed. It is just as hard to know if the offense can pick up where it left off when Prescott got hurt last season.
But what we can say is that there is value in betting on the Dallas Cowboys to win the Super Bowl — right now. Why right now? Because their odds are never going to be higher.
DraftKings currently has them listed at +2500, tied for ninth best in the league with the Broncos, Seahawks and Colts. But if Prescott gets off to a hot start with a strong game against Tampa Bay in Week 1, the odds are going to drop quickly. If the defense actually looks halfway-decent against Tom Brady, the odds are going to fall even more.
If the Cowboys actually beat the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay on opening night, the odds are going to keep dropping. Heck, if they just keep it competitive, it would not be shocking to see them dip a little.
With one of the easier schedules in the league, things stand to look better for the Cowboys from there. They follow the Bucs up with games against the Chargers, Eagles, Panthers, and Giants — all games they should be able to win on the strength of their offense alone.
The one big roadblock on their schedule is the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 11.
Of course, if the Cowboys lose in Week 1 and struggle, their odds are going to get a lot longer. But should that happen — who cares? They will not have a shot of winning, and even the most loyal of fans would not bet on them.
But if they win and appear like they have a legitimate shot, their odds are going to get shorter — and the payout smaller.
When it comes down to it — do you have faith in Dak Prescott and Dan Quinn as a defensive coordinator? Yes? Then put your money down on the Cowboys now.
