Sometimes deciding what to bet on is not the most important decision; rather it is deciding who you want to gamble with because there are so many options (in most states). Rather than do a lot of time-consuming research in the various books, most people will choose to go with a familiar name like DraftKings or FanDuel.
Both made their names in daily fantasy but have since expanded into online sports betting. Bettors not sure which they should go with would probably like the answer to the following question:
What is the difference between DraftKings and FanDuel?
They are both sportsbooks with competitive odds. Each will offer a welcome bonus for new customers. DraftKings is active in more states, but both are offered in quite a few. Both will let you place bets on the major North American sports, i.e., the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, college football and college basketball.
So, what is the difference between them? Why take one over the other?
It depends on what matters more to you as a bettor. If you are looking to bet on a niche sport, DraftKings tends to have more of a selection. DraftKings also tends to carry more leagues in popular sports (i.e., basketball, soccer) than FanDuel.
If you want the option to research the teams/players a little more before placing your bet, it is easier to do so via DraftKings than FanDuel. DraftKings offers stats on-site, FanDuel does not.
FanDuel has a better welcome bonus (but neither has a great one). FanDuel is offering a risk-free bet with a max value of $1,000. Now, DraftKings is offering a first deposit match with a max value of $1,000, but they are only matching 20 percent of your deposit.
That means you must deposit $5,000 to receive the max value. The terms and conditions attached to it will make it pretty difficult to earn the bonus unless you bet often. FanDuel tends to have better promotions and bonuses overall, as well.
But if you are more interested in just flat out winning more money, go with FanDuel.
The vig is often a little higher with DraftKings than FanDuel, which means DraftKings charges you more to bet with them. It is easier to explain this with a few examples:
At DraftKings, if you bet the under on the Cowboys-Buccaneers season opener (51.5), the moneyline is -112. At FanDuel, the moneyline on the under (52) is -110. That means you have to risk $112 to win $100 at DraftKings but just $110 at FanDuel.
On a singular level, the difference is not significant, but on a macro level, it certainly adds up.
