What Is The Kentucky Derby Dress Code?

What should you wear to the Kentucky Derby? A lot of that depends on where at Churchill Downs you’ll be watching the race.

Although there is no official dress code for the 2021 Kentucky Derby, one of the famous pastimes is for spectators to dress to the nines. The Derby is considered to be somewhat of a fashion event as high-profile celebrities use the occasion to flash extravagant outfits on the red carpet, and it’s an opportunity to showcase spring fashion and flaunt vibrant colors.

Despite having no “official” dress code, Churchill Downs can deny you admission if your attire is deemed inappropriate. They allow three types of wear: business casual, smart casual and track casual. Depending on where you are seated, the encouraged attire could vary.

Business casual is required in certain clubs and suites at the track. Blazers, jackets and dresses are preferred but you can still wear sweaters, vests, and shirts with collars. Pantsuits, slacks and capri pants are also appropriate. Jeans, shorts, t-shirts, halter tops, athletic wear and tennis shoes are not allowed in these designated areas.

Smart casual is very similar to business casual and worn in some suites and rooms. The key differences are that jackets and blazers are optional and dress jeans and dress shorts are appropriate. No cargo shorts are allowed nor are t-shirts, halter tops and tennis shoes.

Track casual is a little more lenient on what you can wear. The same clothing considered appropriate for the other two is appropriate for track casual, but with a couple more exceptions. Golf shorts and tennis shoes are permitted in track casual areas. Athletic wear, torn denim, halter tops and worn-out clothes are still considered inappropriate. The fans in the infield tend to wear track casual attire as they are often moving around other areas of the track all day.

Make sure to review the dress code for the section you are sitting in before you get there.

Many women often choose a simple dress to wear with a solid color or floral pattern that gives off the excitement of spring. The most important accessory to the outfit is the hat. Over the years, it has been a tradition to wear exotic wide-brimmed hats that boast flowers, ribbons and feathers. The hat is the main focus of the outfit and should not be overshadowed by the dress or other accessories. For shoes, women can wear sandals or heels. But it is important to know that it is hard to maneuver around Churchill Downs and is an all-day event, so consider bringing an extra pair of flats. It is also a good idea to bring a bag to carry essentials like your phone, water, wallet, sunglasses and anything else you might need.

For the men, the most important piece of the outfit is the blazer. A navy blue or seersucker blazer will give you a more refined look. A complimentary colored button-down is essential to pulling everything together. Pair that with eye-catching colored pants and you will stand out in a big crowd. Most men wear a necktie, but if you want to be more adventurous, go with a bow tie. In terms of shoes, loafers are very popular and meant to be worn sockless. Recently, men have also partaken in the hat tradition at the Derby. A fedora or a straw hat can certainly finish off a dapper look. And always remember, the Kentucky Derby is an event where flashy is better, so don’t hold back.
